Autumn Term 2023
Welcome to Year 6!
We are really looking forward to learning in Ichthus Class this term.
We have a very exciting text to kick off our learning in English this term. ‘The Nowhere Emporium’ provides a bridge between the English skills from Year 5 to Year 6 and will feed into our story writing. This will be followed by the narrative poem ‘The Highwayman’, which will help us to develop writing in role with different levels of formality. We will be using Accelerated Reader to help us hone our reading skills and introducing DoodleSpell to equip us for the spelling demands of Year 6.
The children will once again be using Power Maths to develop their skills in all areas of Mathematics, including: Place value up to 10,000,000; The Four Operations; Fractions; Measures – metric and imperial.
In Science, we will be learning about Living Things & Their Habitats: describing how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences, including micro-organisms, plants and animals and giving reasons for classifying plants and animals based on specific characteristics. This will be followed by Electricity: making series circuits and asking ‘What will make a bulb brighter or a buzzer louder?’ and ‘What will make a bulb dimmer or a buzzer quieter?’
In Religious Education, the children will develop their understanding of Christianity by considering the interesting question: ‘Creation and Science: Conflicting or Complementary?’ In the second half of the term, we will also explore the question: ‘What Kind of King is Jesus?’
In our study of WW2, in History, we will be investigating the Battle of Britain and asking questions such as: ‘What made Hitler unsuccessful?’ and ‘How did technological advances help Britain to win the war?’
In Geography, we will ask: ‘Where does our energy come from?’ We will be learning about renewable and non-renewable energy sources, where they come from and their impact on society, the economy and the environment.
In Art & Design, we will be looking at how a 2D drawing can be made into graphic design packaging.
Our Design & Technology focus is on textiles. We will be using a combination of textiles skills such as attaching fastenings, appliqué and decorative stitches. The children will design, assemble and decorate a waistcoat for a chosen purpose.
In PSHE, our themes for the half term are ‘Being me in my world’ and ‘Celebrating difference.’
Madame Stacey will be teaching us about introductions and Armistice Day in French, while Mr Servant will be sharing some Blues Music with us.
In Computing, we will learn about Online Safety and Programming using Python. We will also be looking at Computing Systems and Networks, namely the importance of Bletchley Park to the WW2 effort.
